Libertarian MP David Limbrick has repeatedly campaigned to legalise pepper spray for self-defence. In November 2024 he moved a motion asking the Legal and Social Issues Committee to inquire into allowing capsicum spray for self-defence. In February 2026 he tabled a 3,340-signature petition calling on the Government to legalise pepper spray for adults with no criminal convictions.

In August 2025, Libertarian MP David Limbrick moved a motion asking the Victorian Law Reform Commission to review self-defence laws, particularly as they apply in people's own homes, with reference to section 76 of the UK's Criminal Justice and Immigration Act 2008. Under the UK approach, householders are only barred from using force that is "grossly disproportionate" and argued this approach needs to be adopted in Victoria.
Now David Limbrick MP has committed that if re-elected in November 2026, within his first 100 days he will table the “F*** Around and Find Out” bill in parliament to legalise pepper spray & Castle Law in Victoria.
I’m putting this issue at the centre of my campaign for re-election because people in my electorate feel helpless in their own homes.”
“Having more police is only part of the solution for fixing law and order. The right to protect ourselves might as well not exist when the law is so weak. If someone threatens our families in your own homes, all bets should be off, and the law should have our backs.”
“And everyone I speak to – and women in particular - overwhelmingly support the idea they should be allowed to use pepper spray. They just want to feel safe. There’s no need for a trial, it’s been successfully legalised in the Northern Territory, so let’s go.”
